Past, s. Small fraction of eternity of which we have a slight and regrettable knowledge. A moving line called Present separates it from an imaginary period known as Future. These two large portions of Eternity, one of which continually clears the other, are forever different. One is darkened by grief and disappointment, the other illuminated by the prosperity and happiness. The Past is the region of sobs, the Future, the realm of singing. In one crouches Memory, clad in sackcloth, their heads covered with ashes, mumbling penitential prayers, in the sunlight of the other Hope flies calling us at the temples of success and pleasure pavilions.
